There are a number of ways in which the teeth can be whitened.

If you have noticed stains on the surface of your teeth, or you are simply dissatisfied with the shade of your smile, you might consider a whitening treatment. The cosmetic treatment is very popular thanks to its ability to achieve very good results. When it comes to choosing a treatment, you will need to consider whether you would prefer to have the process performed at your dentist’s office, or in the comfort of your own home. Read on to find out how each method of whitening works, and which one is best for you…

How does laser whitening work?

Laser teeth whitening is performed in your dentist’s chair. During the process, your dentist will cover your teeth in bleach and hydrogen peroxide gel. These formulas will then be activated with the use of a laser light. When the gel is activated by the laser light, it is able to penetrate the teeth and break up stain-causing compounds to reduce discolouration. In order to protect your gums and other soft tissues in the mouth, your dentist will use a special rubber dam to ensure that the whitening gel does not touch anything other than your teeth.

How does take-home whitening work?

While laser teeth whitening is highly effective, some patients prefer to whiten their teeth at home. Take-home whitening kits involve the use of custom-made whitening trays. These trays are made in a laboratory and are based off an impression of your teeth. This ensures a comfortable fit. As part of a take-home whitening kit, you will also receive a tooth whitening gel, which must be placed into your custom tray. Your dentist will let you know how much whitening gel to use and how long to wear your tray for each day. In most cases, at-home whitening takes between two to four weeks to achieve optimal results.

Is teeth whitening safe?

As long as you have your teeth whitened by or with the guidance of a qualified professional, the treatment is both safe and effective. There are, however, a few possible side-effects — these include gum irritation and tooth sensitivity. These side-effects should resolve within a week or two. If you

experience any considerable discomfort, it is important that you let your dentist know as soon as possible.

Why consider a whitening treatment?

Teeth whitening treatments are increasingly popular as many people suffer from stains and discolouration. Stains are often caused by certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, wine, dark sauces and highly pigmented fruits and berries. Discolouration of the teeth can also be caused by poor oral hygiene, as well as lifestyle habits like smoking. The natural aging process, certain diseases and medications can also contribute to stains and discolouration, impacting the appearance of your teeth.
